Expatriate Insurance, product details

Which sicknesses are covered?

Which sicknesses are covered by the Expatriate Insurance?

The insurance covers medical expenses arising from sickness during a journey. Sickness during a journey refers to sickness which has occurred during the assignment and which requires immediate medical treatment.

Applying for compensation for medical expenses

Do you need to apply for compensation for medical expenses under the Sickness Insurance Act from the Finnish Social Insurance Institution before claiming for indemnity from If as you are covered by the Finnish social security system?

No, you do not have to. If you apply for compensation from the Social Insurance Institution first, take copies of the receipts for us. Send them, and the account of the Social Insurance Institution of the compensation paid, to us in connection with your claim. If you do not apply for the compensation yourself, sign a letter of authority which you will find in our claim form, or the claim for compensation and the letter of authority which you will find on the reverse side of Finnish medical invoices.

In this way we can apply for the part covered by the sickness insurance for the expenses we have paid for you.

If the insurance card is not accepted by the hospital or phycisian

Pay for the expenses yourself and file a claim afterwards on our websites. If the case involves expensive treatment, ask the physician to send us a medical certificate, a treatment proposal and a cost estimate. Only after having received these can we give a written payment guarantee.

Insurance during the holiday

This insurance is also in force during holidays and leisure-time journeys if the assignment contract and the Expatriate Insurance are in force.

Travelling to home country for treatment

Basically we will compensate treatment at the place of assignment. A journey to the nearest country where it is possible to receive treatment can be indemnified only if such a journey is necessary for medical reasons. In these cases a medical certificate must be sent to us. Compensability is always solved on a case by case basis.

When young child has to travel for treatment

The insurance covers the travel expenses of one accompanying person when a child cannot travel alone and treatment in another place is medically justified.

Expences to the funeral of a close relative

We will pay for tourist-class tickets to the place of funeral. The insurance does not cover accommodation costs or travel expenses arising in the home country. Please contact us to check who are considered close relatives according to the terms and conditions.

Attach the tickets and related purchase receipts to your claim, as well as an account of the family connection (for example, an extract from the population register or a copy of it) and of the death.
