New technologies bring new challenges, and this also applies to photovoltaic (PV) systems. Although PV panels are nothing new, it is important to understand that improperly installed, poorly maintained and aging PV systems can pose significant hazards.
However, installing PV panels on combustible roofs not only increases the fire hazard, but it could also increase other hazards that should be considered. PV systems contain multiple components, including the module circuitry, cables, inverters and combiner boxes etc., which introduce several different risks.
In the event of a fire, firefighters may have to intervene while the system is still energised, exposing them to dangerous voltages and potentially delaying effective firefighting efforts. From a fire safety perspective, we advise using non-combustible materials in roof structures where solar panels are installed. Proper installation and regular maintenance are key to minimising risks and ensuring the safe operation of PV systems.
