The eruption of the Icelandic volcano disrupts air traffic in various areas of northern Europe

Volcanic ash from the Icelandic volcanic eruption has reduced visibility which has led to restrictions on air traffic.

If the insured in unable to depart on a planned flight for instance from Norway to Helsinki, this incident does not yet fall within insurance cover. If, however, the insured is unable to depart from Norway at the planned time and for this reason misses his/her connecting flight from Helsinki, this then is a question of travel delay which falls within the travel insurance cover. Under the insurance terms and conditions the insured cover is defined as follows:

“Being late for a journey shall be deemed to have occurred when:

  • public transportation has been delayed or a public transportation service is prevented from arriving at
the departure point of an aircraft, a boat, a train or a coach or the departure point of a connection, due to
weather conditions, a technical fault, a traffic accident, a criminal act or the orders of a public authority.

The Insurance shall indemnify the extra reasonable and necessary travelling and accommodation expenses, however, subject to a maximum amount equivalent to the cost of the original journey. Eating and food expenses shall not be indemnified as delay expenses.”

Under the current circumstances, the cancellation or curtailment of a journey is not an insured event covered by travel insurance.

Airlines must take care of customers who have been left stranded waiting for a return flight. If your flight has been cancelled due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland we kindly ask you to seek compensation for the costs first from your airline company or travel agency. When seeking compensation from the insurance, please provide us with the decision of airline company or travel agency.
